The Arctic Balloon Expedition of 1897 was an ill-fated attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon north from Danskoya, and then on foot, south from Kvitoya, in which all three expedition members, Andrée, Strindberg and Frænkel, perished.Andrée had proposed a voyage by hydrogen balloon from Svalbard to either Russia or Canada which, with luck, was to pass straight over the North Pole. It was not to be and the medal commemorates the discovery of the expedition's remains. EF
